SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
ASSEMBLY- Thursday, January 18, 2007 & Friday January 19, 2007
This particular assembly will be given by three reputable, award-winning Spoken Word artists. The poets will present original work that is both inspirational and appropriate for school-aged children. The performances will be dealing with issues from physical abuse, AIDS awareness, race relations, self-education, etc... Each poet will perform three to four pieces lasting approximately four minutes per poem. The poets will also briefly discuss some of the poetry, shedding light on their intent, as well as take any questions from the audience.
WORKSHOP - Thursday, January 18, 2007 & Friday January 19, 2007
The workshops will consist of poetry activities, discussions, question and answer sessions, and a brief discussion about the establishment of the Rockdale County High Slam Team.
Writing Activity:
Students will come up with their own poetry phrases using the grammar combination, "possessive pronoun, abstract noun, (is a) gerund, concrete noun".
Ex: Your love is a walking cloud. The students then share their phrases with the class and give their peers the opportunity to interpret their lines. This activity takes the technical side of language arts and shows the students how intriguing and imaginative writing can me.
Discussion:
The Importance of Writing As A Means of Self-Expression
Students will discuss how journals, raps, etc... give them an outlet to be themselves. Poets will then give personal testimonies on how writing has allowed them to face their own fears, gain confidence, and even travel the world to share their messages with others that are afraid to speak up or change their situation.
Discussion:
How to Make It As An Independent Artist
Poets will tell the whole process of creating their work, recording, distribution, marketing and promoting, booking, etc... Poets will stress the importance of owning and profiting off of your own material and not simply waiting for the day to be "discovered".
