Untangle my thoughts.

I need Africa.

I must ward off America.

America has changed me.

My people have been scattered—

My people have been stolen—

Our minds have been bleached—

We must parry the menticide.

I am the sun of Africa.

My roots run deep beneath

The ocean. My soul is the Land

Of Cush. My mind is Egypt.

Untangle my thoughts.

I need Africa.

I must ward off America.

America has changed me.

I cannot abandon America.

America is my pigmentation.

Africa is my Mother Earth.

I must blend America, with Africa.

I am a synthesis of the two.

I am a mulatto: I am America;

I am Africa: I am the best of

Both worlds. I must be whole.

I cannot untangle my thoughts.

I cannot ward off America.

I need Africa. I also need

America. I am a synthesis.

Africa breathes through me.

I am the breath of Africa.

America breathes through me.

I am the breath of America.

I must repair my thoughts.

I must love myself.

I must love to feel free.

I am Africa. I am America.

Perseverance Gave Me Wings To Fly

My mother told me the sky is the limit so she planted determination in I and gave me wings to fly

Furthering my education was always on the “to do” list but a language of fear fundraised voices of doubt inside

but….

Perseverance, identified with my womanly struggles of postponing marriage and motherhood…and…Perseverance deferred my creative flow by sending my imagination a lifejacket to remain afloat until I was able to reach that finish-line and congratulate that cap and gown…. on a job well done!

Perseverance, awoken pockets of sleeping energy en route to a one woman class room at the kitchen table and taught me how to walk in the shoes of a student, professor, disciplinarian and mentor by shifting my focus and not allowing me to tip-toe around homework assignments nor flirt with the Young & Restless on the couch or “play catch me if you can” on weekends wearing White Zinfandel apparel winking at all the bow legs potentials

On blind dates with the textbook and pen in hand….Perseverance gave me a reflective sight with waterproof glasses to envision a brighter tomorrow ….

That one day my muddy waters will turn into subtropical high tides….

That one day zeros on a blank check will follow a career and I wouldn’t have to stretch pennies until they bounce back @ month end and dollars $ signs would be taller than I to afford the bread and butter on the kitchen table

Perseverance, preceded the light in my pupils and gave me a treetop vision of blue skies and unborn configurations so I wouldn’t live the life of Tyler Perry’s Diary of a mad black woman

Through God’s strength…. perseverance turned the pages for 3 1/2 long years when my will-power was so limp on crouches, when I was feeling so fragile wanting to give up and break perseverance only allowed me to bend like a bamboo stick it wouldn't let go of my hand until completion

Perseverance escorted me down the aisle and presented me with my (AIC) Associates in Claims professional designation!

What is it I want?

To marry you!

What it isn’t?

A way to trap you

To make a life with you is what I want

To wake up to you everyday would be a blessing

Heaven sent from God I think is our message

To create a future with you and the babies

To watch them grow as we age

To show in front of God and our family

That our love now takes center stage

That we have made the decision to see it through

Good and bad happy or sad

No other men no other women

Just me and you the

The commitment of our love renewed

What is it I want?

To marry you!

And I promise no more late night clubbing

No more giving any other man but you my lovin

From this day forward I will dedicate my life

If you would only ask me to be your WIFE!

Baby Begotten Baby

So I met him three years ago today,

A roller coaster ride I must say.

After 2 months of talking

And 1 night of passion

A baby was then on the way.

See the funny thing was

I loved him from the moment we met

His swagger his mind was something I could not forget

So a baby coming from the both of us

Seemed like a beautiful thang

Until he let me know that it wasn’t just us

See my baby had more than one identity

Three to be exact, and with these

Three men in him their was three other she’s

But I was suppose to be happy because I was not gurl number three

I was one in his heart, Yea what a line of crap if I did

That to him I would be no more than a whore

So anyways back to the story

I actually stood by him while he did his thang

Hoping and praying that one-day he would see me

To be the only true lover and friend he would ever need.

So we went away for anniversary on an Island

That was so beautiful that I knew this was the day

He would ask me to be his wife, and then he just

Stood there with a blank stare and said I have a baby on the way

And I looked at him and said no we do not

Until I realized he wasn’t talking about me

So angry and distraught I wanted to blame her

I wanted her to feel all the anger and sadness she put inside of me

Until I realized it was not she but he

Who destroyed my ever after and took my love for granted

I gave him all of me and he gave it to she

We had his first daughter and that was my place I stood proud

But she was now carrying his little gurl now and I wanted to scream out loud

How could he let this women take my place I held so dear

But guess what I still stood by him in his fear.

This other women that he would have to deal with

Remember how I said I was number one

Well guess what there were always three and none of them included me!!!

I Found Myself in Him

The profound feeling I get when I lay in your chestnut complected arms is insatiable.

The conviction you have for your job and children are marvelous.

A reserved type demeanor you let others see, but the admirable debonair brotha is what you strive to be!

Your strong tall stature is a heavenly body sent from above.

A boldness in your eyes A great mans vitality. Young in the heart but strong in the mind.

The sweet taste of your lips is a nectarous delight that sends me in to a euphoric delusion of happiness and trust, and I am much obliged to give you my heart.

Because you are my brightest star. There is no sun that can out shine you.

Something very special was breathed into you like God gave you a secret that has yet to be reveled.

Suave sleek but can he be a man of his word to show conviction in that is not absurd.

For I am intertwined in his aura.

Some of the words he converse is penetrating to the mind.

How can this gentleman be so inventive?

To capture my thoughts in his eyes and reciting them to me without even saying a word.

To believe in him I swear by his virtue that I am his only with absolution.

The fondness that he shares for my complexion, smooth skin kissed by Hershey chocolate, and boy does he like to savor.

I swear by my heart that my love for him is eternal. I pledge to him that if we are together that with his will and my strength we can do more than move mountains.

We can have everything that life has to offer!!!

…STARTS WITH YOU

We’re asked if we’re there yet

But just last night around my block

Justice was fighting for peace

From the look of it all

As drugs and guns still reigned like a feast

An all you can eat buffet was taking a fall

So you tell me

Are we there yet?

Harder, more than ever

For people to provide for their families

While politicians can’t even agree

Health, education or just hate and fight the enemies

The Majority claim they’re not even prejudice

While Minority often called “those people”

As the Medias shows struggles and failures, violence and death

Swept under in a smooth but hypocritical way

Greed, success, money and fame is being hidden away

But what needs to be realized is that living and death,

Don’t have a culture or color tags on ‘em

If you really think about it à

Once the show’s over

All that’s left to see now

Your own reflection taking a bow

Today, Majority swears up & down

Appearing not being in opposition

While daring their own

To give power to Minority

Just to hope and pray

Succumbing to temptations

Will only be a gesture of pity (charity)

So you tell me

Are we there yet?

Schools, education and survival

Or fear, violence and death?

Parents, teaching and supporting

Or abusive speeches used to shatter hopes & dreams?

Caused by despair and distress

Over Politician’s oppressive revolution

Religions, faith and redemption

Or doubts and sinners

Medias, successful stories of progress

Or malice, hatred and wars

Along with power and greed

CEO’s and employers calls it adequacy & efficiency

But often mistaken or three times out of five

It’s under cover favouritism

Prejudicial comments empowering in disguise

So you tell me

Are we there yet?

Some marriages are consumed

With ulterior motives

Versus love and genuine concerns

Without a backstage door to even return

Selfishness being the main issue

Followed with high and unrealistic expectations

Unconditional and mutual, dismissed, put up on a shelf

With caring and respect

Only to be used and taken for granted

When convenience is available

Yet at the end of our days

Once it’s all over

Not culture, color & shades

Will determine who gets love or hate

So you tell me

Are we there yet?

Think about it, why did it took

From natural disasters; Katrina’s now Ike’s

From blitz of the two major seeds of “The Apple”

To school’s fusillades

From countries & communities starvation or poverty

To bullies, beaters, abusers and rapists

Through blood and tears

Before Majority & Minority

Started reuniting for hopes of equality?

Tomorrow morning, remember

That the day will end

When it does, you and your reflection will be left

What happens before then

Is still up to you to make it better

Now, you ask yourself

And tell me

Are we ever gonna get there?

As I fight evanescence it can be hard see, how inevitable, it’s hard to stop me. Pullin out a certain radar vision, the only way I can see ‘em, and in the blink of an eye, that evil is down, weak sista...of the devil, dead at the feet of niggas’ rebels. You betta believe the next on my list is this lil’ thing temptation, who’s always a bitch. So me gets me breda passion to join the good fight, but only to be seen as one figure of night, with this fist in the air blazin’ up through despair. No way this can’t win, but see temptation done taken over summa my closest negras, and slowly but surely, it’s workin up to the sistas. So me thinks me gonna put her in my turf, the jungle where I work, so my lefts and rights can test her worth. So I hit her on the phone sayin’ “girl you know the deal, I’m joinin up wit ya clan, no bullshit all real, so here’s this invitation to my spaces of jungle muses, maps and locations provided here if you are to lose it…” Busted back, a few naps then set up my traps, feelin extra extra black as I mark my tracks. Now it’s bout that time for me to sick, truth and justice on this seductress trick. She arrives in the jungle lookin’ all dazed, trapped all up in what appeared to be a maze. My God! Like Osiris I rise up from the trenches and toss the demon witch into anutha dimension, unfortunately, underestimated her, had I. To my left and right came her team and she let, the fury of evil hit me through sorrow and regret. They hold me down and chain me up, like old days, battered and defeated, then temptation looks at me sayin, “nigga we got you beaten.” I say “you rule not, in my space witch.” In a last attempt to rise I transcend their lives, allowing me a single effusive super-powered thought, who knew I could travel through time and space? And in the blink of an eye, temptation’s up outst my face. Now I really see who I’m against, but next time I’ll serve them a true taste of my junk, blessed…

Feel like Dyin'

She was bumping that City High "what would you do" song
And her heart cried.
Eyes dried and irritated from the saline her eyes produced,
From years of mental agitation and
emotional frustration of years used.
A series of her life's episodes flashed in her minds eyes
And as she viewed the slide show of her emotionally
strung out rollercoaster ride
She wondered if things would be better if she'd died,
Cuz she felt like dying.
This life was overrated.
Her world was raided
By love, lies and money.
Like a bear hungry for honey
She was hungry for satisfaction.
For the taste of genuinely good fortune
But she was deprived.
This quick life,
Consumed by drug deals and drive bys,
Traps and metaphorical land mines and closed minds.
Having an open mind to what life has to offer was like
Being the smartest kid in school and to them that just wasn't cool,
So he felt like dying.
No time for crying and eye drying
Cuz only females and punks cried.
So he put on his façade and continued to lie
And emotionally die
Cuz death seemed to be the only way out.
Only chicks and babies pouted
So he got his grown man on and strode to his block to get it poppin.
While his mans and dem were hoe hoppin'
He was dope serving and coppin'
Asking God for another option that still had the same cash flow.
He still had to raise lil man and
His D boy impersonation had neared its end.
As the block got hot with crooked ass cops
He felt like dying.
Soul felt like flying
Cuz he didn't feel like hiding.
The game got too deep
And the price of life became too priceless
And dope wasn't cheap
So he'd slain the D boy within and it lay there dying.
The hood was crying,
His soul was flying
No longer would he feel like dying.
